Hazel Smith

Founder
ReTweed

Starting out in community education 28 years ago, Hazel set up, developed and managed projects combatting exclusion and inequality. Much of the work she has been involved in focused on gender equality; managing women’s charities, working with the EU on research and development projects promoting parity in education, enterprise and employment and as a volunteer in Senegal with women’s development. In 2016 Hazel moved to Berwickshire and applied her life’s learning, creating ReTweed, a social enterprise delivering craft, heritage and textiles skills to women facing multiple barriers, breaking cycles of poverty, isolation and low aspiration. ReTweed represents excellence in its field: in less than 3 years it has gone from an idea to employing 8 staff, becoming a trusted provider, delivering 10 courses to 72 women and simultaneously delivering volunteering and workshops for over 440 people.
